Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan received Today, Saturday, members of the political bureau of the Hamas movement in Istanbul. According to sources in the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting discussed developments in the situation related to the ceasefire and humanitarian aid needs, without adding further details. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs circulated a photo of the meeting and scenes showing Fidan’s meeting with the Hamas delegation, which includes the movement’s head in the Gaza Strip, Khalil al-Hayya.
The meeting comes ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers of countries that met with the United States of America on the sidelines of the United Nations meetings last month, to discuss the next phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Fidan had reported, in a press conference yesterday, that Istanbul would host a meeting, next Monday, with the participation of foreign ministers of the countries that met with US President Donald Trump in New York. He described the Istanbul meeting as very important, noting that the New York meeting was held last September with the participation of leaders and heads of government of countries such as Türkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Pakistan, Egypt and Indonesia.
Fidan stated that the consensus at the New York meeting led to laying the foundation stone for the peace plan and the historic agreement in Gaza, which represents a “ray of hope” for resolving the ongoing crisis in the Strip.
The Turkish minister asked about the Istanbul meeting: “Are there obstacles to the peace plan? What are the problems? What should we do in the next stage? What will we discuss with our friends in the West? And what kind of support in the ongoing negotiations with America?” Answering: “We will discuss all of these matters in the meeting on Monday, and we have held many meetings and phone calls in this regard.”
