The public session dedicated to discussing a proposed law aimed at criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria began today, Saturday, in the National People’s Assembly.

The session was chaired by Council President Ibrahim Bougali, in the presence of members of the government staff. The draft, which includes 5 chapters and 27 articles, is based on the principles of international law, affirming the right of peoples to legal redress, achieving historical justice and preventing impunity.

The law aims to establish responsibilities and acknowledge and apologize for colonial crimes, as a basic step for reconciliation with history and protecting national memory.
