The National Center for Commercial Registry counted 32,761 new female traders in various economic activities in Algeria during the past five years, with an estimated growth rate of 20.5%.
The centre’s figures relating to women merchants registered in the commercial registry indicated that the number of women merchants moved from 159,807 at the end of 2019 to 165,911 at the end of 2020, then 173,687 at the end of 2021 and 179,049 in 2022, reaching 187,741 in 2023, to be recorded at the end of February. 2024 approximately 192568.
The same source added that these women currently represent 8% of the total number of merchants registered with the National Center for Commercial Registry, whose number was estimated at 2,308,181 at the end of February, indicating that 175,556 women merchants are registered as natural persons and 17,012 are registered in the category of legal persons ( Institutional marches.
The same source confirmed that female merchants, as natural persons, are primarily active in the field of retail distribution, with an estimated number of 90,813 women, representing 48.22% of this category, followed by the service activity with 75,426 female merchants, representing 40.05%, while 15,990 other female merchants are active in the production of goods. (8.49%), 5,746 in wholesale distribution (3.05%), 270 in traditional industry production (0.14%), and 92 in export (0.05%).
As for the number of women merchants active in the field of services as legal persons, it comes at the top of the list with 7,750 women (40.28%), compared to another 5,279 women merchants active in the production of goods (27.44%), and 2,143 women merchants in importing for resale on condition (11.14%), and 2,009 in wholesale distribution (10.44%), 1,607 in retail distribution (8.35%), 304 in export (1.58%), and 147 traders in the field of production of traditional industries (0.76%).

As for the activities most practiced by women traders as natural persons, the figures of the National Center for Commercial Registry indicate retail trade in foodstuffs at a rate of 17.4%, followed by retail trade in clothing, jewellery, leather goods, and hygiene and beauty products at a rate of 10.2%. As for service activities related to shelter and feeding, they accounted for 6.9% of the total women merchants, compared to 6.3% for activities related to transportation and ancillary services.
In the same category, retail trade activities for tools and equipment for sports activities, entertainment, office equipment, and artistic activities recorded a rate of 6.2% of women traders, and those related to retail trade for equipment, supplies, and furnishing recorded a rate of 4.3%.
As for the category of legal persons, corporate entities are particularly present in the activities of study, consulting and assistance offices at a rate of 8.6%, followed by production, manufacturing or transformation activities related to the field of building materials, architectural works, major public works, and industrial heating equipment at a rate of 8.2%, and 6.4% for cultural and entertainment activities. Including the media and advertising.
As for activities related to transportation and ancillary services, they are practiced by approximately 4.8% of merchants, and the activity of renting structures and equipment for professional and domestic use was estimated at 3.2%, and the activities of installing and repairing all industrial and household equipment represent 3.2%.
On the other hand, the number of foreign women registered in the commercial registry, as of the end of February 2024, reached about 687 registered women, including 504 foreign institutions run by women and 183 female merchants registered as natural persons.
