Africa Cup: Tunisia and Tanzania accompany Nigeria to the final 16

The national teams of Tunisia and Tanzania joined the ranks of the finalists for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco, after drawing 1-1 in the third round.

The two teams of the third group competed on the field of the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, on Tuesday evening.

The Eagles of Carthage initiated the attack at the beginning of the match, as Ismail Al-Gharbi almost opened the scoring with a wonderful shot that was returned by the post.

The German club Augsburg playmaker had the opportunity to make amends before the end of the first half, after his teammate Hazem Al-Masturi was obstructed in the penalty area.

Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Tunisia a penalty kick after reviewing the shot via video technology.

Al-Gharbi executed the kick successfully, scoring his first goal in the African Cup of Nations.

In contrast to the first half, the Tunisian team looked more reserved as it returned from the changing rooms.

Coach Sami Trabelsi’s squad paid the price quickly, as Tanzanian Faisal Salem took advantage of the ball bouncing in front of the penalty area in the 54th minute to hit a ground ball that goalkeeper Ayman Dahman was unable to block.

Al-Qanaaa changed its camp from the Tunisian regions to the Tanzanian ones after the equalizer, so the players of Argentine coach Miguel Angel Gamondi went to defence.

The Tanzanians succeeded in maintaining this gain after they won the last places for the “best third-placed teams” that qualified for the quarter-finals.

The teams of Benin, Mozambique, and Sudan have already reserved visas for the best “thirds,” after scoring three points and benefiting from the stumble of Angola and the Comoros.

Tanzania outperformed the Angola team by only one goal, scoring three and conceding four, while Angola was content with scoring two goals and conceding three.

Next Sunday, the Tanzania national team will clash with the host Morocco, the leader of Group A.

In another match, the Nigerian Green Eagles became the first team to reach the second round with a full score.

Victor Osimhen’s teammates rained down Uganda’s net with a hat-trick, at Fez Stadium, with Paul Onuachu and Rafael Onyedika scoring twice.
