3.8 million diabetic patients in Algeria

The Minister of Health, Mohamed Siddiq Ait Messaoudane, revealed that 3.8 million patients with diabetes have been registered in Algeria, noting that the prevalence of the disease reached 14.4 percent among adults and 32 percent among those over 70 years of age.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Health, Mohamed Talhi, on behalf of the Minister of Health, Mohamed Siddiq Ait Messaoudane, on the occasion of the celebration of World Diabetes Day 2025 under the slogan: “Diabetes and Well-Being,” according to a statement by the Ministry of Health on Thursday, said that diabetes is one of the most widespread chronic diseases in the world, affecting about 589 million people, equivalent to 11.1 percent of the world’s population, and the number of those infected may exceed 853 million by the year 2050.
The Minister also pointed out that the prevalence of diabetes in Algeria reached about 14.4 percent among adults and 32 percent among those over 70 years of age, meaning approximately 3.8 million patients, which places health systems facing real challenges that require concerted efforts to reduce the spread of the disease and its complications.
The same speaker highlighted that the celebration of World Diabetes Day this year focuses on prevention and patient self-empowerment through constant health education, as it is the most effective way to avoid complications associated with the disease, highlighting that the patient’s participation in managing his health condition is an essential foundation for improving his quality of life and making him effective in maintaining his health.
The Minister added that the Ministry of Health aims, through this occasion, to achieve a set of goals, including raising awareness of the role that lifestyle plays on health, especially diabetes, and encouraging measures that aim to address the main risk factors, especially nutrition, by adopting favorable health behaviors that allow reducing this disease.
Ait Masoudane stated that his sector aims to raise awareness of the importance of accurate monitoring of diabetes by promoting self-monitoring of blood sugar levels and consulting a treating physician as soon as possible to develop corrective measures, and strengthening mobile campaigns for information, awareness and early detection of diabetes and its complications for the benefit of the population throughout the country by mobilizing mobile clinics with all partners.
The Minister stressed that changing the lifestyle represents a collective responsibility to prevent this disease, calling for the implementation of innovative strategies to limit the spread.
The Ministry of Health launched the updated version of the National Guide to Good Practices in Diabetes, which is a reference document that aims to enhance health education and provide patients and health professionals with modern tools for optimal management of the disease.
Two mobile clinics were also launched under the slogan “The Path to Prevention” and “Changing Diabetes,” which will travel to a number of states across the country from November 15 to 19, 2025, with the aim of raising awareness and early detection, in addition to training general doctors about the disease and its complications, and encouraging healthy lifestyles among children and adults with diabetes.
