Zahran Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of New York, Thursday

Democrat Zahran Mamdani, a prominent Trump opponent, will assume the mayor of New York on Thursday, becoming the first Muslim to hold this position since his election last November for a four-year term.
Mamdani will be sworn in by New York State Attorney General Letitia James, in an official ceremony followed by a popular celebration with the participation of prominent figures such as Bernie Sanders. His election comes as a political and symbolic message about making New York “a great city to live in.”
Mamdani based his platform on combating the high cost of living, providing affordable housing, child care, and expanding public transportation. Although he had not previously held senior positions, he surrounded himself with an experienced team and began a dialogue with the business community to alleviate fears of the exodus of the wealthy.
The new mayor, 34, is receiving significant media attention and balancing his support for the Palestinian cause with continuing to gain the trust of the city’s Jewish community. His wife, Rama Duji, is also a painter and has a large following on social media platforms, and her cultural presence reflects part of the family’s general image in New York.
