Warning against using plastic food wrap during Ramadan

The Association for the Protection, Counseling and Protection of the Consumer (APOCE) has warned Algerian families about the incorrect use of plastic food packaging, highlighting that warning against this dangerous substance is necessary because this substance is now present in every home and is used on a daily basis without sufficient awareness of its potential dangers.

The association explained in a post on its official page that the transparent wrap commonly used to cover dishes is mostly made of PVC or low-density polyethylene, and that despite the legal license for these materials for food use, their safety depends largely on the method of use.

The association pointed out that the danger does not lie in the plastic itself as much as it lies in the chemical additives included during manufacturing, especially the plasticizers used in PVC, as these substances are transferred to the food under the influence of heat or when it comes into contact with fatty foods such as meat and broth, or acidic foods such as tomatoes, lemon, and vinegar.

In the same warning, the association warned that the presence of the phrase “intended for food use” on the product does not constitute an absolute guarantee of safety in all cases, expressing its regret at the common confusion between compliance with standards and complete safety regardless of the conditions of use.

To reduce these risks, the association recommended limiting the use of plastic wrap to covering cold foods or those kept at normal temperature, avoiding direct contact with hot, fatty or acidic dishes, and completely refraining from using it when heating in the microwave. It also urged people to move towards safer and more sustainable alternatives, such as glass, ceramic and steel utensils.

APOCE believes that Ramadan, with its intense cooking and food storage, represents an ideal opportunity to establish a culture of conscious and responsible consumption, to preserve the health of the Algerian consumer and protect his environment at the same time.
