These are the recommendations of the Ministry of Health for people with chronic diseases during Ramadan – New Algeria

The Ministry of Health, through the General Directorate of Health Prevention and Promotion, issued Instruction No. 01, dated January 15, 2026, regarding preventive measures during the holy month of Ramadan, under the slogan “Diabetes and Well-Being…For a Safe Ramadan.”

The Ministry stressed that the month of Ramadan may pose an increased health risk for some groups, especially for those with chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or kidney failure, which may lead to an imbalance in their health.

The Ministry of Health’s instruction aims to enhance the awareness of patients and health professionals about the risks associated with fasting among those suffering from chronic diseases, promote safe health care during Ramadan, encourage tribal medical consultation for all who wish to fast, in addition to organizing local media and educational campaigns in coordination with institutional partners and civil society.

In this context, the Ministry called for organizing awareness-raising activities, before and during the month of Ramadan, that encourage patients to consult their doctors and highlight the importance of adhering to medical recommendations and necessary therapeutic adjustments.

It also called for organizing therapeutic education sessions for the benefit of patients, focusing on how to manage illness during fasting, adherence to treatment, recognizing danger signs, and proper behavior when complications occur.

She stressed the need to ensure regular medical follow-up for chronic patients during Ramadan, especially high-risk groups, while adapting treatments according to the specificities of fasting, in accordance with approved clinical recommendations.

The Ministry recommended organizing awareness-raising campaigns, in cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments, civil society, and local media, focusing on the necessity of “not fasting without medical advice, especially among the elderly and vulnerable groups…”

It also emphasized giving special attention to vulnerable groups, especially the elderly, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those suffering from complex chronic diseases, while encouraging the permission to break the fast when the health condition requires it.
