The United Nations condemns the US operation in Venezuela

The United Nations expressed, on Tuesday, its deep concern about the military operation carried out by the United States in Venezuela, which resulted in the arrest of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, warning that this operation undermined a basic principle of international law.
Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, told reporters in Geneva: “States should not threaten or use force against any state’s territorial integrity or political independence,” stressing that accountability for human rights violations cannot be achieved through unilateral military intervention.
Shamdasani’s statements came after the American forces carried out an operation to arrest Maduro on Saturday morning, which was accompanied by an air bombardment on Caracas and a heavy deployment of naval forces, while the Commission rejected the American justifications related to “historic human rights violations.”
Shamdasani added that the Office of the Human Rights Commission has been following the situation in Venezuela for a decade, expressing her fear that American intervention would exacerbate instability and increase militarization in the country.
