The Minister of Mujahideen and People of Rights, Abdelmalek Tashrift, confirmed that the text of the law criminalizing the French colonization of Algeria is a qualitative legislative step that would strengthen the national legal system concerned with protecting national memory, and affirm the state’s adherence, with all its constitutional institutions, to its sovereign right to preserve its national history and defend its memory by all constitutional and legal means.
In a presentation made by the government representative, on Monday, during a public session in the National Assembly chaired by Azouz Nasseri, Speaker of the Assembly, and in the presence of the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Najiba Djilali, on the text of the law criminalizing the French colonization of Algeria, before the members of the Assembly, the Minister praised the rich and constructive discussion witnessed in the presentation session before the National Defense Committee on January 8, praising the high level of interventions, which reflects a deep national awareness and a high sense of historical responsibility towards The collective memory of the nation, highlighting the importance that the legislative institution attaches to addressing the files of our glorious national history.
The Minister stressed that the presented text is a qualitative legislative step that would strengthen the national legal system concerned with protecting national memory, and affirm the state’s adherence, with all its constitutional institutions, to its sovereign right to preserve its national history and defend its memory by all constitutional and legal means.
He explained that recalling the crimes of French colonialism does not only fall within the framework of recalling the past, but is considered a moral and historical duty, given the grave crimes committed by colonialism that exceeded all limits, left millions of martyrs, and whose physical, psychological, and environmental effects still exist today.
The Minister considered that this text constitutes a clear message that Algeria is demanding recognition and responsibility, through frank accountability of the former colonizer regarding his commitment to the international principles related to the right of peoples to justice and reparation, based on the United Nations charters that recognize the responsibility of states for human rights violations, and the right of peoples not to erase their collective memory.
At the conclusion of his presentation, the Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Defenders renewed his thanks and appreciation to the members of the National Assembly, stressing that their contributions will enrich this text in a manner befitting the sacrifices of the heroes of the immortal November epic, stressing that the proposal for this law is not merely a legislative text, but rather a fulfillment of the sacrifices of the martyrs, and a basic building block in the path of redressing the national memory and strengthening the legal sovereignty of the Algerian state.
