Civil Protection Services revealed that 1,177 traffic accidents were recorded within a week, leaving 28 dead and 1,376 injured, while 119 people were rescued due to carbon monoxide poisoning, with 5 deaths recorded.
A statement by the General Directorate of Civil Protection stated, on Tuesday, that during the period from January 11 to 17, 2026, civil protection units recorded 24,833 interventions, and this was as a result of receiving distress calls from citizens. These interventions included various areas of civil protection activities, whether related to traffic accidents, domestic accidents, health evacuation, fire suppression, and security services’ coverage of various demonstrations.
For health evacuations, the protection units carried out 16,194 interventions, through which 16,088 wounded and sick people were treated and evacuated to hospitals, while in the context of traffic accidents, the same units made 2,094 interventions for 1,177 traffic accidents that led to the death of 28 people and the injury of 1,376 others who were treated and transferred to hospital centers. It is considered the heaviest toll recorded in the state of Mascara, with 3 people dying at the scene of the accidents and 9 injured. Others as a result of 15 traffic accidents.
The civil protection units also carried out 882 interventions that allowed the extinguishing of 506 fires, including domestic, industrial and various fires, the most important of which were recorded in the state of Algiers 60 fires, Blida 44 fires and Tipaza 28 fires, while the protection units in the field of various operations recorded 5663 interventions in order to save 653 people in danger and cover 5018 ambulance operations.
Regarding incidents related to poisoning with carbon monoxide (Co) gas emitted from various means of heating and water heaters, the protection units recorded 49 interventions that allowed the provision of first aid to 119 people poisoned by carbon monoxide gas and then they were transferred to hospital institutions, with the death of 5 people poisoned by carbon monoxide gas recorded.
