The President of the Republic: Representing Africa in the Security Council is a historical right and delayed justice – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, stressed today, Saturday, that the African continent obtaining the place it deserves within the Security Council is self-evident and an urgent necessity.
This came in a speech delivered by Prime Minister Sefi Gharib, on behalf of the President of the Republic, during the meeting of the Committee of Ten affiliated with the African Union concerned with Security Council reform, which was held on the sidelines of the continental organization’s summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
The President of the Republic stressed that the world is witnessing a worrying escalation of conflicts and the expansion of conflict hotspots, in exchange for a clear institutional deficiency that hinders the effectiveness of the international system, which, according to him, has led to the weakening of the international community’s confidence in international law, the consolidation of double standards, and even the revival of the logic of force at the expense of the principles of justice, cooperation, and equality.
President Tebboune explained that the African continent is facing increasing security challenges that have taken on dangerous dimensions, exacerbated by external interference and conflicting agendas, which has contributed to an unprecedented decline in the levels of peace and stability within the continent.
He added that Africa bears a large share of intertwined crises, including the spread of terrorism and transnational organized crime, the continuation of hotbeds of tension and conflict, in addition to the phenomenon of unconstitutional changes of governments and the resulting instability and challenges in the field of governance.
In this context, the President of the Republic stressed that Africa’s representation in the Security Council is not a favor or a privilege, but rather a historical right and long-awaited justice, calling for the correction of what he described as the injustice to which the continent has been subjected.
The President also called on African countries to confront attempts to obstruct or undermine the process of Security Council reform, stressing the importance of maintaining a unified African position and continuing to unify ranks on the international arena.
He stressed the need not to engage in other interest blocs, to ensure that Africa speaks with one voice until its legitimate demands are achieved.
At the end of the speech, the President of the Republic renewed Algeria’s firm commitment to collective work within the Committee of Ten and defending the unified African position, expressing his hope that the summit would contribute to strengthening African unity and finding collective solutions that support security and peace on the continent.
