The President of the Republic renews the call for an immediate cessation of hostilities in South Sudan – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, renewed Algeria’s call for an immediate cessation of all hostilities in South Sudan, stressing Algeria’s firm support for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of this country.

This came in a speech delivered on his behalf by Prime Minister Nadhir Al-Arbawi during the meeting of Heads of State and Government of the High-Level Specialized Committee of the African Union on South Sudan (C5), where the President stressed the need to give primacy to dialogue as the only option to achieve lasting peace, calling on the signatory and non-signatory parties to the revitalized agreement to follow a comprehensive path in preparing for the electoral elections expected at the end of the current year.

The President appreciated South Africa’s initiative, in its capacity as Chair of the C5, to host a political dialogue between the concerned parties, urging everyone to engage positively in it.

He also called for the preparation of a clear electoral road map that includes precise and realistic deadlines to ensure the organization of free and fair elections, stressing in the same context the importance of accelerating the implementation of security arrangements, especially with regard to the unification and redeployment of forces, as it is an essential foundation for enhancing stability and creating the appropriate political climate.

The President of the Republic affirmed that Algeria, based on its principled commitment to South Sudan, will continue its support for African and international efforts aimed at making the transitional phase a success, calling on the international community and donors to intensify urgent humanitarian support to confront the crisis from which the South Sudanese people are suffering.

He concluded by stressing that full implementation of the revitalized agreement remains the best way to achieve comprehensive national reconciliation and ensure the stability of South Sudan, in a way that serves the security and stability of the African continent as a whole.
