The Minister of Justice presents the amendment to the Nationality Law before the National Assembly – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

Today, Tuesday, the Minister of Justice, Keeper of the Seals, Lotfi Boudjemaa, presented before the National Assembly the draft law related to nationality, during a public session chaired by the Speaker of the Assembly, Azouz Nasseri, in the presence of the Minister of Relations with Parliament, Najiba Djilali.

The Minister explained that the text aims to protect the nation’s sovereignty, stability, and territorial integrity, by expanding the procedures for stripping one’s nationality, including the original one, according to precise conditions related to actions that affect state institutions, national unity, the country’s stability, and symbols of the liberation revolution, or public engagement in activities hostile to Algeria.

Boudjemaa pointed out that the procedures include cases of loyalty, providing services, or receiving money from a foreign country to harm Algeria’s interests, or cooperating with hostile forces or entities, in addition to belonging to or leading terrorist or subversive organizations or promoting them.

He stressed that stripping of the original nationality only takes place if the person concerned possesses another nationality, with the exception of cases of high treason, spying with a foreign party, carrying arms against Algeria, or harming the nation’s unity and territorial integrity.

In this context, the Minister praised the initiative of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, related to resolving the situation of Algerian youth abroad in fragile situations, considering that it falls within an approach aimed at strengthening social cohesion and non-exclusion.

For their part, members of the National Assembly appreciated the draft law, considering that compromising the nation’s sovereignty and security constitutes high treason that requires legal deterrence. In his response to the interventions, Boudjemaa stressed that deprivation of nationality is stipulated in the current legislation, and that the proposed amendment came to expand it in line with developments, while preserving its exceptional character associated with serious acts.
