On Monday, the Minister of Health, Mohamed Siddiq Ait Messaoudane, received at the Ministry’s headquarters the representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Algeria, Faiza Bendriss, in the presence of a number of central administration officials.

The Ministry of Health stated that this meeting was an opportunity to review the outcome of the bilateral cooperation that has existed for years between the sector and the United Nations Population Fund office in Algeria, and to discuss ways to strengthen and expand it in the future, especially in the areas related to reproductive health and family planning, reducing maternal mortality, and clinical care for women who are victims of violence, in addition to supporting the capabilities of health professionals to ensure improvement in the quality of health services provided.

In this context, the representative of the United Nations Population Fund pointed to Algeria’s commitment, which was affirmed during the Nairobi conference in 2019, to achieve the three basic goals of the summit, which are eliminating preventable maternal deaths, meeting all needs in the field of family planning, and eliminating all forms of violence against women, within the horizon of the year 2030.

For his part, the Minister of Health highlighted the important gains achieved by the national health system, especially the significant decrease in maternal mortality rates and the increase in life expectancy, in addition to improving health coverage and enhancing the well-being of the population.

The Minister stressed the need to continue and strengthen the strategic partnership with the United Nations Population Fund, valuing its role in supporting national health programmes, especially those related to maternal, women’s and reproductive health. He also stressed that this cooperation contributed significantly to consolidating preventive and participatory approaches, in line with the priorities of the national health policy and Algeria’s international obligations.

In turn, the representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Algeria, Faiza Ben Driss, described Algeria as a strategic partner, stressing the Fund’s readiness to continue working, coordinating and accompanying national efforts in various fields related to maternal and women’s health.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two parties expressed their optimism about the future of cooperation between Algeria and the United Nations Population Fund, stressing that continuing joint work will allow achieving qualitative and sustainable achievements in the field of maternal and women’s health.
