German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt expressed his understanding of the accusations directed at the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany party of spying for Russia, stressing that the party’s positions show “clear closeness” to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Dobrindt said, in statements to the German newspaper “Handelsblatt”,
“The AfD is behaving as if it were Putin’s German party, which fuels suspicions that there is something beyond sympathy.”
His statements come after the speech of the Thuringian State Interior Minister, Georg Mayer, who expressed doubts about the party exploiting its parliamentary right to ask questions to serve Russian interests, which sparked widespread controversy in political circles.
The party denied these accusations, while the leader of its branch in Thuringia, Björn Höcke, called for the dismissal of Minister Mayer.
Dobrindt also criticized the upcoming visit of Representative Markus Frohnmayer to Russia,
Which the Secretary-General of the Christian Social Party, Martin Huber, described as “betrayal of the homeland.”
Considering that “true patriots do not defend an aggressive war that violates international law.”
