The French Interior Minister conditions his visit to Algeria

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed today, Tuesday, his desire to visit Algeria, indicating that he is linked to achieving a “beginning” in Algeria’s response to Paris’s demands, most notably the release of French journalist Christophe Glez and the deportation of Algerians residing illegally in France.
This came during his speech to TF1 station, in a comment on the statements of former French Minister Ségolène Royal after her return from Algeria, in which she stressed the necessity of the minister’s visit, but indicated that setting preconditions reflects an unwillingness to go.
Nunez stressed that operations to return Algerians to their country must begin immediately, explaining that technical and security talks between the two countries have recently resumed.
These statements come in light of an ongoing diplomatic crisis between Algeria and Paris since the summer of 2024, following France’s recognition of the autonomy plan for Western Sahara “under Moroccan sovereignty.” It worsened after a series of sensitive issues, including the arrest of an Algerian consular employee in France and the exchange of expulsions of diplomats, in addition to the case of the French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, who benefited from an Algerian presidential pardon.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also recently summoned the Chargé d’Affairs of the French Embassy to protest an investigation broadcast by a public television channel that addressed the deterioration of relations between the two countries, which reflects the continuing tension in the political and diplomatic files.
