The French ambassador is an “undesirable person” in Algeria – New Algeria

A report broadcast by the Algeria International channel, the day before yesterday, revealed that the French ambassador to Algeria, Stephane Romatet, had become an “undesirable” person, against the backdrop of statements he made during a television program in France that dealt with Algerian-French relations.
The channel reported that this type of statement “does not honor diplomacy nor honor its customs and traditions,” in direct reference to what was stated in the “France 2” channel program last Thursday. The channel reported that the Algerian authorities also decided to prevent the family of French journalist Christophe Glez from visiting him in prison, in a measure that came within the framework of reciprocity, after France refused to allow the family of an imprisoned Algerian diplomat to visit him.
It is noteworthy that the Algerian diplomat is being held in a case related to the alleged kidnapping of Amir Boukhras, accused of terrorism and known as “Amir Dizad,” while the French journalist Gleize was convicted of seven years in prison after communicating with the “MAC” organization, which is classified as a terrorist organization in Algeria.
“France 2” program statements
I explained Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs The France 2 program in which the French ambassador appeared was a fabric of lies and slander, and represented an attack on the Algerian state, its institutions and symbols.
Subsequently, the Ministry summoned the French Chargé d’Affaires in Algiers to protest the broadcast of the program, pointing out the responsibility of the official French channel and its guardian, and that this behavior would not have occurred without the support or official silence of the French authorities, which is considered a violation of international norms. These developments come in light of diplomatic tensions that have been ongoing for nearly two years between Algeria and Paris, which have escalated recently after a series of media and diplomatic clashes.
Algeria had previously withdrawn its ambassador to Paris, Said Moussi, in August 2024, in protest against France’s departure from its neutrality in the Western Sahara issue and considering the Moroccan autonomy plan “the only solution” to the conflict.
In April 2025, France, in turn, summoned Ambassador Stephane Romatet to Paris for consultations, following a severe crisis characterized by the mutual expulsion of diplomatic officials.
French diplomatic involvement
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the French ambassador personally, and his country’s embassy in Algeria, participated in the offensive media campaign, which reinforces the impression that the campaign was recommended by French official bodies.
The Ministry explained that this behavior represents a new escalation in anti-Algerian practices, which are supervised by French official circles. The Algerian government also condemned the French program in the strongest terms, considering that the French ambassador’s involvement in these actions constitutes a violation of diplomatic norms and international laws.
She stressed that Algeria reserves the right to take all necessary measures to confront these actions and protect the state’s sovereignty.
