Panetta, who also held the position of former US Defense Secretary, added in a statement to CNN that the United States committed a “fatal mistake” by entering Iraq two decades ago, which led to the start of a war that lasted for years.
He explained that “a lesson that the president must learn, because if he enters and attacks Iran, there is no doubt that the United States will be in a regional war at this point,” warning that Iran is condemned to respond.
He went on to say, “Check the matter. It may be an air strike, but it will definitely involve the United States in a war with Iran and the region will ignite,” he said.
Panetta’s statement comes with the entry of the Israeli -Iranian conflict its tenth day, with attention to the White House and the decision of US President Donald Trump about entering the conflict and hitting Iran in a move that the latter said would lead to targeting American interests in the region.
The air war began on June 13 when Israel attacked Iran, which caused a panic in the area that was on the brink of the abyss since the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza in October 2023.
Israel considers the only country in the Middle East, which is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, and said it struck Iran to prevent Tehran from developing its own nuclear weapons.
As for Iran, which confirms that its nuclear program is peaceful, it responded with strikes on Israel. It should be noted that Iran is a party to the Treaty of the Non -Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, while Israel is not.
