The battle came after the colonial authorities discovered that about 400 students from various states of the country had gathered at the Sabbaghniyeh roundabout, in preparation for joining the revolution in response to a call. Most of the students were able to survive, while the leader was martyred along with 27 students, in an epic that embodies the depth of altruism and the spirit of redemption that characterized the revolution.
Professor Sidi Moussa stressed that the Battle of Sabbaghnieh represented a model of revolutionary discipline and the spirit of responsibility, noting that protecting the students at that time contributed to strengthening the ranks of the revolution with young frameworks that ensured the continuity of the struggle. He also stressed that remembering the heroism of the martyrs remains a national duty towards those who created Algeria’s independence.
For his part, Omar Bouregaa, who is interested in history, considered that Si Zoubir’s courage is still a source of pride for the residents of the region, explaining that this battle, along with other events across the country, confirmed the strength of the revolutionary organization and the people’s rally around the liberation project.
The remains of the martyrs remained at the site of the battle for years after independence, before they were reburied in Sabbaghaniyeh alongside the martyrs of the region, while the municipality of Hammam Malouane and the local authorities commemorate this epic annually in fulfillment of their sacrifices.
