The Algerian University keeps pace with national and international transformations in 2025

The Director General of Scientific Research and Technological Development at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mohamed Bouhicha, confirmed that the reforms initiated by the Ministry during recent years have enabled the Algerian university to keep pace with national and international transformations and actually enter the knowledge economy, revealing that there are 335 national research projects under implementation, most of which reflect the concerns of the social and economic environment, which ensures the appreciation of the results of this research.
Bouhicha added, during his hosting of the “Morning Guest” program on the first radio channel, on Tuesday, that the Algerian university has become a major lever for the knowledge economy with the implementation of 215 international research projects within Euro-Mediterranean partnerships, most of which have a tangible economic impact, such as projects in the agricultural field that include saffron cultivation within international partnerships, in addition to 335 national research projects in progress.
He stressed that one of the most prominent axes of the sector restructuring policy is the integration of the Algerian university into the knowledge economy, as it is a general trend from which higher education policy cannot be separated at the present time. He revealed the presence of 335 national research projects under implementation, most of which reflect the concerns of the social and economic environment, in addition to 215 international research projects completed by Algerian researchers within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean partnerships, most of which have an economic impact.
Buhaisha explained that the Ministry has taken measures in this context, including the creation of an ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship, which allows universities and research institutions to add an economic dimension to their activity, and transform the university into a real engine of economic development.
He pointed out that universities were able, within 14 months, to establish or initiate the establishment of more than 2,700 mini-institutions, which reflects a strong dynamic in supporting the national economy, stressing that all research funded by the General Directorate of Scientific Research is carried out according to clear and pre-programmed objectives to train doctoral students and meet the needs of economic partners.
He pointed out the Ministry’s reliance on a number of committees to support the performance and visibility of the Algerian University, which reflected positively on its ranking in global rankings, as Algeria is often ranked among the best countries in terms of the number of universities in several international classifications.
Buhaisha stressed that the outcome of the reforms that have been underway for three years has been positive, especially through redirecting scientific research towards projects that respond to the needs of social and economic partners, after research previously lacked an economic dimension. He added that all research currently being completed by research centers and laboratories funded by the General Directorate of Scientific Research is carried out according to clear and pre-programmed goals, whether it is related to training doctoral students or meeting the needs of economic partners.
At the international level, Bouhicha explained that there are 215 international research projects carried out by Algerian researchers within the framework of Euro-Mediterranean partnerships, most of which have an economic impact, including projects in the agricultural field, such as saffron cultivation within international partnerships. He said, “47 economic branches affiliated with the field of scientific research were counted, with a capital estimated at about 12 million dinars, and a turnover exceeding 1.5 billion dinars, with an ambition to raise this number to 5 billion dinars.” dinar by the year 2027, which constitutes an added value to the national economy.
