The Algerian Air Force will change the balance of power in North Africa

The Algerian Air Force continues to impose its dominance in Africa, by possessing the most powerful fighters, as it receives the latest fifth-generation aircraft. It will fundamentally and fundamentally change the balance of power in North Africa.
A report by the Military Africa website explained that North Africa is experiencing an arms race, as Algeria is expected to receive Russian stealth fighters in 2026, which represents a strategic counterweight in the region.
The report added that the strategic landscape of the African air war has witnessed a radical transformation, as the continent’s air forces no longer consist of a mixture of sturdy turbine aircraft used in combating terrorism, but rather the features of the continent have changed to consolidate its regional dominance, by possessing the most powerful combat aircraft.
The same source highlighted that Algeria has always been the country most eager to acquire Russian military equipment. In 2025, according to some sources, the Algerian Air Force began integrating the Su-57E Felon, becoming the first African country to operate the fifth generation platform. This acquisition comes as a direct response to regional rivalries and an effort to maintain qualitative superiority in the Maghreb, as the Su-57E aircraft provides Algeria with significant combat capabilities, including internal armament equipment and superior maneuverability thanks to thrust vectoring. The arrival of these aircraft will fundamentally and radically change the balance of power in North Africa, giving Algeria a platform capable of challenging advanced Western defenses.
The report touched on some African countries that are witnessing development in their air forces, including Egypt, which turned east towards China, thinking of the Chinese FC-31 fighter as a ghost solution without political burdens, complementing the Rafale aircraft. Cairo, after Turkey’s initial approval of its participation in the KAAN program, that is, in production and manufacturing, may redraw the map of defense cooperation in the region.
The site indicated that Nigeria has turned towards the Su-75 Checkmate, which represents a “relatively low-cost future option that reflects a regional ambition,” while the actual operational capability is “still far away,” according to the same source. As for Ethiopia, as a rising power in the east of the continent and in the Horn of Africa, it has officially announced its intention to move to fifth-generation fighters by 2030, doubling its air fleet, amid preferences for moving toward Russian platforms, a step that made the report place it within its vision.
