Civil Protection reveals a heavy toll in traffic accidents

Civil Protection Services revealed that 1,333 traffic accidents were recorded within a week, leaving 40 dead and 1,565 injured, while 488 fires broke out across various states of the country, while 430 people in danger were rescued.

A statement by the General Directorate of Civil Protection stated, on Tuesday, that during the period from March 8 to 14, 2026, civil protection units recorded 20,788 interventions, and this was as a result of receiving distress calls from citizens. These interventions included various areas of civil protection activities, whether related to traffic accidents, domestic accidents, health evacuation, fire suppression, and security services’ coverage of various demonstrations.

With regard to health evacuations, the Protection Units carried out 12,583 interventions, through which 12,104 wounded and sick people were treated and evacuated to hospitals. In the context of traffic accidents, the Protection Units recorded 2,369 interventions for 1,333 traffic accidents that led to the death of 40 people and the injury of 1,565 others who were treated and transferred to hospital centers. It is considered the heaviest toll recorded in the state of Setif, with the death of 4 people at the scene of the accidents. 91 others were injured as a result of 82 traffic accidents.

The protection units also carried out 753 interventions that allowed the extinguishing of 488 fires, including domestic, industrial and various fires, the most important of which were recorded in the state of Algiers 91 fires, Blida 22 fires and Oran 21 fires, while the same units recorded in the field of various operations 5083 interventions in order to save 430 people in danger and cover 4449 ambulance operations.

On the other hand, with regard to incidents related to poisoning by carbon monoxide (Co) gas emitted from various means of heating and water heaters, during the same period, civil protection services carried out 17 interventions that allowed the provision of first aid to 36 people poisoned by carbon monoxide (Co) gas, and then they were transferred to hospital institutions, without recording any deaths.
