The pharmaceutical industry sector is keen on achieving drug security

On Sunday, the Health, Social Affairs, Labor and Vocational Training Committee, headed by Nasser Boujlatia, held a meeting devoted to hearing a presentation by the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Qouidari, on the sector’s status, strategy and future prospects.
When opening the meeting, Boujlatia stressed the strategic importance of the pharmaceutical industry sector in light of the rapid health and economic transformations taking place in the world, noting that the pharmaceutical industry has become a matter of national sovereignty and health and social security.
At the beginning of his presentation, the Minister explained that his sector is keen to embody the commitment of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who stipulated the necessity of developing the pharmaceutical industry locally and strengthening the guarantees to achieve national pharmaceutical security, while setting clear goals for the local production of generic medicines and specialized pharmaceutical products.
Qouidari revealed that the results achieved exceeded the set goals, as the percentage of coverage of the national market with local production of medicines, until December of last year, was approximately 83%, and the number of pharmaceutical institutions approved for manufacturing reached more than 233 institutions, of which 138 were specialized institutions, which included strategic and sensitive medicines, especially those directed to chronic and complex diseases, especially with regard to expensive medicines and diseases of a chronic nature, such as anti-cancer medicines and similar biological medicines (Biosimilaires). And insulin pens, which was reflected in the import bill, which declined from $1.25 billion in 2022 to $515 million in 2024, with this downward curve continuing through 2025.
Regarding the future strategy of the sector, the Minister explained that it is based on the basic axes of directing investment towards high added value, enhancing national integration and health security, digital transformation and modernization of management, and promoting exports and pharmaceutical sovereignty through developing a practical plan to encourage the export of Algerian pharmaceutical products.
When they took the floor, the members of the committee presented a number of concerns and proposals, all of which revolved around the necessity of moving towards diversifying production through the manufacture of new medicines, as well as the production of raw materials locally, adopting an effective national strategy for the production and distribution of blood bags,
Working to produce various types of vaccines locally, accompanying and encouraging the private sector active in the field of manufacturing medicines and medical supplies, examining the progress of the sector’s digitization process,
Providing supplies and medicines for those with rare diseases, including children of the moon, approved mechanisms to monitor and determine medicine prices, adopting a forward-looking vision for the development of the Sidal Foundation and giving special importance to the scientific research sector in the manufacture and development of medicines.
