Stifling overcrowding and classrooms with more than 50 students

The Independent Union of Education and Training Workers (SATAF) revealed a disturbing reality that characterizes the current academic season 2025/2026, as it observed a number of serious imbalances that threaten the quality of education despite the efforts made by the Ministry of National Education, such as overcrowding.
Overcrowding stands out as the most dangerous feature of current school admissions, as according to a statement issued by the union, the number of students in one class has exceeded the threshold of fifty students in many middle schools across the country’s states, a number that reflects a real crisis in educational structures, especially in the new urban poles and shadow areas that are witnessing a noticeable delay in the completion of programmed educational institutions.
This situation raises serious questions about the possibility of ensuring quality education in light of this overcrowding, which turns departments into overcrowded spaces in which it is impossible for the professor to monitor all students or apply modern pedagogies.
“Sataf” pointed to a serious lack of pedagogical supervision, especially in basic subjects and foreign languages, due to the refusal of a number of contract professors to join their positions, in addition to the absence of professional competitions during the current year, which led to a wide vacancy in the ranks of education supervisors, principals, and institutional directors.
The union called for urgent measures to be taken to fill this deficit by training professors and employing successful ones from the reserve lists, with the need to correct the shortcomings recorded in the exceptional registrations for the first year and the preparatory stage, which digital platforms have caused confusion.
The union strongly criticized the decision to integrate children with autism spectrum disorder into regular departments without proper preparation, considering that this harmed the progress of the educational process, and called for the establishment of air-conditioned departments equipped with the necessary capabilities to care for this group educationally and psychologically.
It also warned against opening educational institutions before construction work is completed, which poses a real danger to the safety of students and hinders the work of educational and administrative frameworks, calling for companies to be obligated to respect the specified deadlines.
On the social level, SATAF called for a comprehensive review of the wage scale to confront the significant deterioration in purchasing power, while raising the value of the evidentiary point and reducing the income tax. The union denounced the fact that the family grant remained at 300 dinars per child and the single wage grant at only five dinars, at a time when prices are witnessing an insane rise.
She stressed the need to release new amendments to the Basic Law, especially with regard to the economic interests and educational supervision, while abolishing the condition of descent to ensure equal opportunities for promotion, and reviewing the laws related to professional workers and the common ranks.
The union called for a radical reform of primary education through reviewing programs and curricula, and proposed disengaging primary schools from municipalities whose management it described as failing. It also warned of the worsening phenomenon of violence in schools, calling for effective mechanisms to combat it and protect students and educators.
Regarding the retirement file, I called for accelerating the issuance of regulatory texts and enabling education professionals to benefit from legal reductions, while reducing the retirement age to 25 years of work due to the specificity and hardship of the profession.
“Sataf” renewed its adherence to the decentralized management of social services funds, denouncing what it described as “absurdity” in their distribution, as only those close to them benefit from it, while most workers are deprived of their rights.
The union expressed its dissatisfaction with the restrictions imposed on trade unionists and the imposition of judicial oversight on them, considering this a contradiction with the constitution and international agreements, and calling on the higher authorities to intervene to lift restrictions on trade union work.
The National Secretariat concluded its statement by calling on activists and those involved to intensify efforts to spread union awareness and mobilize to extract legitimate demands by all available legal means.
