Supporters of the former Interior Minister are trying to thwart Nunez’s visit – New Algeria
The majority of the French media outlets, known as right-wing platforms, focused their attack on the visit of French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez to Algeria, and pre-judged it to fail even before announcing the results of the talks between the two parties, which appear to be the opposite of what they are promoting.
The right-wing media arsenal has tried to suggest that the issues raised for discussion are those that concern France only, such as the issuance of consular permits in response to deportation orders, which were fabricated by former Interior Minister Bruno Rotayo, and the imprisonment of sports journalist Christophe Glez, while ignoring, at the same time, Algeria’s demands to respect consular cooperation agreements, and not to use visas as a pressure card, as well as the release of the Algerian consul who is in French prisons by decisions. Arbitrary behavior by the former Minister of the Interior, who today bears responsibility for exposing French interests in Algeria to damage that may be difficult to repair.
As usual, the French media continued to promote a prepared narrative, according to which Algeria systematically refuses to receive its citizens against whom deportation orders have been issued by France, despite the fact that it is aware that the French side is violating the relevant bilateral agreements, as the Algerian authorities have alerted to this on numerous occasions.
The strategy used by the French media aims to undermine the visit of the French Interior Minister in solidarity with former Interior Minister Bruno Rotayo, by ignoring a basic fact, which is that the two countries have a bilateral relationship rooted in history, characterized by tensions but also characterized by common strategic interests, framed by the presence of millions on both sides bound by bonds of brotherhood and affinity.
However, the French media still portrays French-Algerian relations based on a colonial mentality, which seems to have not been completely dismantled, as a simplistic interpretation dominates that prevents understanding the demands of Algeria, which sees nothing more than a natural and peaceful relationship, based on mutual respect and equal cooperation between two sovereign states.
Based on this focused campaign and in these circumstances, it is difficult for Laurent Nunez’s visit to achieve tangible results in the short term, because security diplomacy works out of the spotlight, within the framework of secret technical discussions. Media hype also creates unrealistic expectations and hasty judgements. Through continuous media exaggeration, which creates an atmosphere of mistrust between the two parties.
Many observers believe that Laurent Nunez’s visit to Algeria requires a minimum level of consistency between political discourse and the entrenched French media system, which is a factor that is currently absent. Therefore, it is not possible to call for calm in Algeria while allowing the rhetoric of escalation to spread in France.
