Soon recovery of belongings belonging to Emir Abdelkader – New Algeria

A number of possessions belonging to the founder of the modern Algerian state, Emir Abdelkader, are awaiting the return from France, according to what was confirmed by French historian Benjamin Stora.
The same source said in statements reported by French-speaking Algerian media that these collectibles, which included a large part of traditional weapons that belonged to Emir Abdelkader Aljazairi, were on display on the occasion of a Ramadan iftar in the Saint-Sandonie area in the Parisian suburb by the Franco-Algerian Association for Renewal, an association known for its activity among the Algerian community in this European country.
French historian Benjamin Stora also confirmed that these possessions were recovered by the association while offering these possessions for sale at public auction in France earlier.
The financial value of these possessions was not revealed by the same source, but their historical value remains great in the eyes of Algerians, given that they were the property of the founder of the modern Algerian state, Prince Abdelkader Aljazairi.
Prince Abdelkader Aljazairi is considered a symbol of the Algerian resistance against the French colonization of the country starting in the year 1830. He was captured by the French armies and then exiled to Syria after a period of captivity he spent in Toulon in southern France, where he died and was buried in the Syrian capital, Damascus, in 1883 before Algeria retrieved his remains after independence during the era of the late President Houari Boumediene and buried him in the Aliya cemetery in Algiers.
The French historian Benjamin Stora had handed over a file regarding memory issues to French President Emmanuel Macron in the year 2021. The file included suggestions regarding the importance of calm regarding this file with Algeria, through measures that include, in part, returning Algerian historical collections from the colonial period to Algeria, as well as enabling Algerians to make extensive use of the French archives for that period.
Algeria, whether at the official or popular level, attaches great importance to the memory file, a file that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been talking about and its importance almost every time he touches on Algerian-French relations.
During the year 2022, a joint Algerian-French committee was established, including researchers and experts, in order to work on the memory file. Although the establishment of the committee was initiated by the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, at a stage when bilateral relations between the two countries were in good condition, the work of the committee quickly slowed down before it stopped completely after the severe diplomatic crisis that struck the political relations between Algeria and Paris during the recent period.
Bilateral relations between Algeria and France began to deteriorate after a speech addressed by French President Emmanuel Macron to Moroccan King Mohammed VI at the end of July 2024, in which he affirmed his support for the alleged Moroccan proposal called “autonomy” regarding the issue of Western Sahara, which remains an issue of decolonization in accordance with United Nations charters.
The diplomatic crisis between Algeria and France has taken on a more severe character since then, especially after the unjustified hostile political and media campaigns launched against Algeria by both the French extreme right, led by Marine Le Pen, and the neoconservative movement, led by former French Interior Minister Bruno Rotayo.
