Civil protection intervenes strongly due to weather fluctuations

The Civil Protection Units made qualitative interventions following the recent weather fluctuations that affected some states, as operations to absorb rainwater and rescue people in dangerous situations were recorded.

A statement by the General Directorate of Civil Protection stated, on Wednesday, that during the period from January 6 to 7, 2026, civil protection units recorded 3,245 interventions, including 2,235 health evacuations and 727 different operations, across several states of the country, and this was as a result of receiving distress calls from citizens. These interventions included various areas of civil protection activities, whether related to traffic accidents, domestic accidents, health evacuation, fire suppression, as well as security services.

In the context of traffic accidents, the protection units carried out 161 interventions following many accidents recorded across several states of the country, which resulted in the death of 3 people at the scene of the accidents and the injury of 137 others with various injuries of varying severity. The victims were taken care of on the spot and transferred to local hospitals.

The protection services also intervened to provide first aid to 8 people suffocating as a result of inhaling carbon monoxide (CO) gas emitted from heating devices and water heaters inside their homes, with the death of two women recorded in the state of Annaba.

On the other hand, civil protection units intervened to extinguish 3 different urban fires in both Algiers Province and Saida Province. A fire was recorded in which 5 people were initially injured by suffocation from the emitted smoke, as a result of a fire that broke out on the ground floor of a house. The victims were taken care of on the spot and then transferred to the local hospital.

The protection units carried out interventions related to weather fluctuations, especially in the states of Algiers, Tizi Ouzou, Bouira, Camp, Oran, Bashar, Mostaganem, Tiaret, Relizane, Sidi Bel Abbes, Tlemcen, Boumerdes, Tissemsilt, and Bordj Bou Arreridj, where they carried out several operations to absorb rainwater and rescue people in dangerous situations. A total of 86 vehicles were removed from the road network as a result of the accumulation of snow and the accumulation of rainwater on some roads.
