Sanchez rejects Trump’s pressure: Spain will not participate in any war against Iran

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed on Wednesday his country’s refusal to allow American aircraft to use Spanish military bases to carry out strikes against Iran, stressing that his government’s position is clear and represents a refusal to engage in any new war.

This came in response to US President Donald Trump’s criticism and threat to cut trade relations with Spain. “We will not be complicit in an act that harms the world and goes against our values and interests simply for fear of retaliation,” Sanchez said in a televised speech.

He added: “We reject this catastrophe,” stressing that Spain is not alone in this position, as it is shared by other governments, in addition to millions of citizens in Europe, North America, and the Middle East who reject the outbreak of new wars and aspire to a future based on stability and peace.

Sanchez pointed to the indirect repercussions of the Iraq war, such as the escalation of terrorism and rising energy prices, warning that any attack on Iran could lead to similar results of instability and uncertainty, without contributing to the establishment of a more just international order.
