Regarding inflating viewing rates and followers…the Audiovisual Authority warns! – New Algeria
The Independent National Authority for Audiovisual Control expressed its concern about some practices in the media and advertising sector, especially inflating the number of followers and interaction on digital platforms in artificial ways such as buying followers or using so-called “click farms,” stressing that these methods mislead advertisers and harm the transparency of the advertising market.
The National Authority explained in a statement, today, Tuesday, that an increase in some behaviors has been recorded that is based on inflating indicators of follow-up and interaction across digital platforms by artificial means, by buying followers or using what is known as “click farms” with the aim of creating a misleading impression about the true size of the audience.
Based on the same statement, it explained that exaggerating interaction indicators or providing unreliable data about follow-up rates may fall within the misleading advertising practices prohibited under Article 51 of the Book of Terms, as it constitutes a violation of the principles of fair competition that the Authority is keen to protect.
It also warned against circulating lists and classifications that promote the ranking of television channels or artistic works under the name “most viewed” without relying on approved measurement tools.
She explained to public opinion that, in the absence of a specialized and accredited national institution in examining opinions and measuring viewership rates according to unified scientific standards in Algeria, the results and data being circulated cannot be considered a reliable reference, and are often used to justify inflating the prices of advertising space or exerting unjustified commercial pressure on advertisers.
It called on television channels, advertising agencies, and all actors in the media field to adhere to transparency and credibility, stressing that it will take the necessary measures against any violations or abuses in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
The National Authority reminds all audiovisual communication service providers, including those active over the Internet, of the requirements of Article 41 of Executive Decree No. 24-250, which limits the announcement of viewing or listening rates to information issued by competent and accredited institutions.
She added that publishing or promoting data that is not based on recognized measurement methodologies is misleading public opinion and economic stakeholders.
Consumer protection and the promotion of television channels, advertising agencies and all actors called for a spirit of professional responsibility and adherence to the rules of transparency and integrity in advertising activity, in a way that preserves the economic balance of the sector and safeguards the rights of advertisers and the public alike.
Following the issuance of this statement, the National Authority confirmed the necessary regulatory measures regarding any transgression or violation, whether on screens or through the digital platforms of audiovisual communication service providers.
