The Director of the Environment for the state of Algiers, Amal Makhloufi, confirmed that there has been an alarming increase in waste and the phenomenon of wasting food and throwing large quantities of it in a chaotic manner, especially in the first ten days of the holy month of Ramadan. This is despite the awareness and sensitization campaigns launched by the Ministry of the Environment and various bodies in Algeria.
Amal Makhloufi explained when she hosted this morning on the program “Morning guest“To the first radio channel, the statistics related to the first ten days of the month of Ramadan indicate a significant increase in the volume of waste at the level of the “Hamisi” technical landfill center in the capital, where the daily average in normal circumstances ranges between 2,600 and 2,800 tons, while during the mentioned period it exceeded 3,200 tons per day.
She also pointed out that significant quantities of bread were wasted, which necessitated the allocation of white containers specifically designed to collect bread waste. Statistics from the Bread Waste Collection Corporation “Gestal” showed that the collected quantities are approximately 200 tons per day, which doubles the pressure on the institutions charged with collecting and treating waste.
The spokeswoman explained that the ministry launched it on the eve of a month ago RamadanA national campaign under the slogan “Ramadan is integrity and sustainability for generations,” in coordination with various partners, with the aim of rationalizing consumption and promoting a culture of avoiding waste, based on the principles of the Islamic religion that urge moderation and non-extravagance.
