President Tebboune: Climate change has become a real obstacle to the path of development – New Algeria

Confirm presidentAbdelmadjid Tebboune, said on Friday that the negative effects of climate change have become a real obstacle hindering the path of development, especially in Africa, which faces a scarcity of financing necessary to adapt to the climate, in light of the rise in global inflation and the indebtedness of many countries reaching unbearable levels.

President Tebboune said, in a speech delivered on his behalf by the Prime Minister, during his participation in the meeting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government in charge of Climate Change, on the sidelines of the thirty-ninth regular session of the African Union Summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, that this reality has become a factor fueling conflicts, and contributing to the widening of poverty and growing disparities, especially in the least developed countries.

As President Tebboune said – according to what was reported by BYan for the interests of the Prime Minister“Today we face pressure to sacrifice our food and energy security, to bear the burdens of countries that are strictly shirking their historical responsibilities, citing their strategic priorities. We cannot ignore here these unilateral trade measures, which lack any scientific support proving their effectiveness in combating climate change, while studies confirm their devastating economic and financial effects on the capabilities of our developing countries to finance their development policies.”

He also added, “It is unacceptable to bear the consequences of the protectionist tendencies of external parties, while these same parties are evading their clear responsibilities. What we witnessed during the last session of the Conference of the Parties (COP30) of attempts to reformulate the principles of the Paris Agreement is the best evidence of the dangerous slope that some developed countries are seeking to push our economies toward.”

The President of the Republic stressed that the effective fulfillment of climate pledges depends on achieving real climate justice, which embodies the principles of fairness and shared responsibilities, and that developed countries lead global efforts to reduce their emissions, and provide the necessary financial and technological support to developing countries, especially African ones, noting that achieving Energy transfer Fair, and increasing resilience to climate shocks requires more flexible and appropriate financing mechanisms, capable of bridging the resource gap and keeping pace with the enormous financial burdens, taking into account the requirements of sustainable development and the historical responsibility of advanced economies in the current climate deterioration.

President Tebboune stated that Algeria stresses the importance of maintaining the cohesion of the African group during the upcoming international negotiations, and striving to achieve a just transition that benefits everyone and moving away from individual approaches, stressing the need for the countries of the continent to adopt a position to defend their common interests, build ambitious international and regional partnerships, increase the funds directed to them, and facilitate the transfer of technology, to confront the intractable climate dilemma.

In this context, the President added, “This approach must take into account the national circumstances and the varying capabilities of our countries, especially in light of the noticeable decline in international financing. After the increasing difficulties facing our economies in the climate and trade equations, it has become necessary for us to adopt an approach that actually responds to our needs and encourages regional and continental initiatives and South-South cooperation.”

He added, “As a contribution to this continental effort, I worked Algeria To launch an initiative to establish an African civil force to respond to natural disasters, ensuring an immediate and effective response and providing the necessary support to the affected countries. Algeria also seeks in the fields of energy and water resources management to create bilateral and regional coordination and cooperation to enhance the capabilities of neighboring countries and exchange best practices, including the energy interconnection project with the Sahel countries, and the expansion and rehabilitation initiative. Green Dam Which includes the reclamation of 4.7 million hectares, the rehabilitation of 500 thousand hectares, and other important opportunities to enhance our sustainability and the well-being of our people.”
