The President of the Constitutional Court, Leila Asalaoui, confirmed today, Thursday in Algiers, that the holding of the 19th session of the Executive Office of the Conference of African Constitutional Judicial Bodies reflects the common will to strengthen constitutional justice and promote judicial cooperation at the continent level.

In her speech during the opening of the session, organized under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Asalaoui explained that Algeria’s embrace of this event reflects the care that the state attaches, at its highest levels, to promoting constitutional justice and supporting African judicial cooperation.

She highlighted that the conference embodies the pivotal role of constitutional judicial bodies in consolidating the rule of law, preserving the supremacy of the constitution, protecting rights and freedoms, and promoting the principles of democracy and good governance, especially in light of the transformations and challenges taking place on the African continent.

The President of the Constitutional Court affirmed Algeria’s keenness to support initiatives aimed at consolidating the independence of the constitutional judge and strengthening his position, as he is the guarantor of the balance of powers and the guardian of constitutional legitimacy.

In the same context, I considered that the 2020 constitutional amendment constituted a turning point in Algeria’s constitutional path, through the creation of the Constitutional Court, as a strategic option aimed at improving constitutional oversight and enhancing the protection of rights and freedoms.

The conference witnessed the presence of the President of the National People’s Assembly, Ibrahim Bougali, a number of advisors to the President of the Republic and members of the government, in addition to representatives of African constitutional judicial bodies.
