Parliament is witnessing an expansion in electoral districts and seats – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

The proposed draft amendment to the Electoral Districts Law revealed an increase in the number of seats in Parliament and the expansion of electoral districts. The project proposes adding 15 seats in the National People’s Assembly and 33 seats in the National Assembly, while increasing electoral districts from 58 to 69 districts, in addition to a special district for the national community abroad.

This amendment coincides with the creation of 11 new states as a result of the recent amendment to the administrative division of the country, which requires an amendment in the number of districts and seats. According to the 2022 population statistics, the distribution of seats between the parent states and the newly created states will be adjusted according to demographic criteria.

The reforms will also include reviewing electoral lists and adjusting voters between old and new polling stations. The political parties are expected to share their observations on these amendments before the final version is approved, as part of consultations with the Presidency of the Republic, which took a decision to review the law and consult the parties concerned.

The step comes within the framework of preparations for the upcoming summer elections, with the need to complete legal procedures before the date set for summoning the electoral college on April 8.
