Lopez wanted to give his fellow Muslims time to break the fast, by eating dates and drinking water, a gesture that sparked the event on social media.
The goalkeeper of the French club Nantes knows that the regulations of the French Football Federation prohibit stopping the match in order to allow fasting players to break their fast, although the International Federation imposes a short break during hot days and in areas where it is difficult for teams to complete a full half without interruption.
The pioneers of social media platforms praised Lopez’s position, and at the same time criticized the game federation, as they refuse to deal with Muslim players during the holy month.
At the beginning of the month of Ramadan every year, the French football community witnesses cases of discrimination and disagreements between clubs, players and even coaches due to its handling of the commitment of many of them to fasting during match days.
The case of the Algerian left-back, Joan Hajjam, who currently plays for the Swiss club Young Boys, is a good example of this.
The Desert Warrior was marginalized by his French coach, Compouare Antoine, when he was active in Nantes.
The current coach of Paris FC excluded Hajam from the team’s matches for a long period due to the latter’s adherence to fasting.
This situation affected Hajam’s future, as he later decided to move to the French League, a step that allowed him to shine and emerge.
