Minister Attaf: The African Union’s participation in the G20 is an opportunity to break the marginalization of the continent – Algerian Al-Hiwar newspaper

Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, stressed today, Thursday in Addis Ababa, the importance of good preparation for the African Union’s participation in the G20, expressing Algeria’s hope that this membership will turn into an effective tool to remove Africa from the cycle of marginalization and exclusion.

During his speech on the second and final day of the work of the Executive Council of the African Union, Attaf stressed that participation in itself is not a goal, but rather a means to enable the continent to defend its development priorities within the largest international economic forums.

He pointed out Algeria’s support for the measures adopted to share representation tasks between the African Union Commission and the rotating presidency, suggesting inspiration from the “Oran Process” experience to unify the African voice within the G20.

The Minister also appreciated South Africa’s presidency of the group, considering that the Johannesburg summit constituted a turning point, as it was the first summit headed by an African and on African soil, and re-included the continent’s priorities within the global economic development agenda.

Attaf stressed that the summit’s outcomes represent an important gain for Africa, which should be invested and strengthened within the framework of the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20.
