Today, Sunday, in Skikda Province, the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Ali Zerrougui, supervised the laying of the foundation stone for the completion of the landing point for the submarine fiber optic cable “Medusa” in the municipality of Al-Qal, within the framework of a working and inspection visit.
According to a statement by the Ministry, this strategic project, whose completion work began last October from the port of Algiers, comes within the framework of strengthening the national communications infrastructure and supporting high-capacity international connectivity.
The “Medusa” cable extends over a distance of more than 8,700 kilometers, linking more than 10 countries across the Mediterranean Sea, with a transmission capacity of up to 20 terabit per second, making it among the largest maritime connectivity projects in the region.
The project includes two landing points in Algeria, in Algiers and the city of Al-Qal, with a direct connection to stations in southern Europe.
The project aims to meet the growing demand for high-flow Internet services, especially fifth generation and cloud computing, and to enhance the security and continuity of digital networks by diversifying maritime connectivity routes, thus consolidating Algeria’s role as a strategic hub for digital connectivity between Europe and Africa, in compliance with the directives of the President of the Republic on the necessity of diversifying sources of Internet supply.
This process falls within a timetable that began in 2020, and included the stages of studies and contracting, followed by the completion stage between 2023 and 2026, with the eastern part of the project being operated at the end of 2026, and entering into full service at the beginning of 2027.
