Marine fishing… creating a national fund to compensate seafarers – New Algeria

The Director General of Marine Fishing and Aquaculture, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Miloud Treaa, revealed the preparation of a work plan for the sector for the current year, which mainly includes the creation of a national fund to compensate sailors during periods of cessation of activity, whether due to weather disturbances or during periods of biological rest.
Tariaa explained, according to what was reported by Algerian television, that work is currently being done in coordination with the relevant authorities to establish the legal and regulatory mechanisms for the fund, which will be financed through several mechanisms, including contributions from sailors during periods of seasonal abundance of fish, the state’s contribution, and additional financing mechanisms under study, such as certain import fees on some materials.
The same official added that this mechanism comes “in response to the concerns of professionals in the fishing sector, as many of them find themselves without activity and therefore without income during these periods,” explaining that this fund project has been included in the sector’s work plan for the year 2026.
In a related context, Tariaa pointed out that the goal of this mechanism is to guarantee a minimum income for sailors during the biological rest periods that apply every year or during the occurrence of weather disturbances that prevent them from practicing maritime activity normally, and this is similar to what is done in many countries.
In his speech, the same speaker appreciated the role played by the National Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture, which works in coordination with other state chambers, to raise the various concerns of professionals in the marine fishing and aquaculture sector across the various states of the country.
