Iran disrupts Starlink service and a new challenge for Elon Musk

Forbes website revealed that the Iranian authorities succeeded in disrupting the Internet service via Starlink satellites, using advanced military jamming devices, in a step that experts considered a radical shift in the state’s control over communications networks.

According to reports, about 30% of Starlink data traffic was initially halted, before the percentage quickly rose to more than 80% within hours. Experts pointed out that this reflects Iran’s growing ability to control digital networks, in light of increasing internal unrest as a result of the deteriorating economic conditions.

Previous reports had confirmed that American billionaire Elon Musk was offering the Starlink service for free in Iran, as an alternative solution during the regular Internet outage, which the Iranian authorities had almost completely shut down terrestrial cables and cell towers.

These developments come at a time when international pressure on Iran is increasing due to its nuclear and missile programs, making disrupting the Internet via satellite part of its efforts to control information and prevent the spread of protests internally.
