Today, Sunday, the Minister of the Interior, Local Governments and Transport, Said Saioud, made a surprise visit to the port of Algiers, designed to determine the status of the port’s saturation with containers and the duration of their stay, especially in light of the delay of some economic operators in withdrawing their containers, which caused a state of overcrowding that affected the good conduct of port activity, according to a statement by the ministry.
In this context, the Minister stressed the need to strengthen coordination between the port administration and customs services, oblige concerned dealers to assume their legal responsibilities, and take appropriate regulatory measures, including including violators on blacklists when necessary.
By the way, the Minister expressed his satisfaction with the positive results achieved at the level of the marine waiting area, after registering that only two ships remained waiting, an achievement that was previously considered difficult to achieve. He also appreciated the efforts made by those in charge of managing the port, and the police and customs services, in exchange for the level of coordination achieved.
During the second leg of the visit, the Minister reviewed the status of berths 8 and 9, where he was informed of their current condition, and gave immediate instructions to accelerate the completion of the works in accordance with the approved conditions and standards, while stressing the need to complete them before the arrival of the summer summer season, in addition to expanding the marine station to improve reception conditions and enhance the port’s capabilities to respond to the requirements of increasing traffic.
The Minister concluded his visit by directing the Secretary-General to activate inspection and follow-up cells at the level of all ports, to ensure precise monitoring of all operations and rapid intervention to address any imbalances, ensuring the smooth and safe conduct of port activity at the national level.
