The Ministry’s Director General of Market Control and Supply, Ahmed Makrani, explained in a statement to “Waj” that the process includes licensing the Algerian Red Meat Company “Alviar” and the Mediterranean Public Economic Refrigeration Corporation “Frecomedit” to import about 144,000 heads of live sheep and more than 46,000 heads of cows, provided that they are slaughtered through approved slaughterhouses.

He added that private traders have also begun the process of importing 21,000 tons of vacuum-packed red meat from Brazil to support the national supply and ensure the stability of supply, noting coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries to prepare a distribution plan that includes the various states of the country.

The same official confirmed that widely consumed items will be available during the month of Ramadan, especially oil, sugar, semolina, and flour, noting the stability or decline in prices of some vegetables as a result of improved production.

In the field of supervision, Mr. Maqrani indicated that about 85 percent of the sector’s agents, who number more than 9,000, are being employed to monitor the markets and suppress fraud, in addition to mobilizing fixed and mobile laboratories to analyze samples throughout the week.
