Harvard extends its president’s term amid pressure from Trump

The board of directors of Harvard University, which is facing financial pressure from the administration of US President Donald Trump against the backdrop of protests in support of Palestine, decided to extend the term of its current president, Alan Garber, indefinitely, after it was scheduled to expire at the end of the 2026-2027 academic year.
According to the university’s student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, Garber expressed his gratitude to the board and considered running the university “the most important part of his career.”
This decision came after the Trump administration announced last May freezing funding worth $2.2 billion allocated to the university, and suspending contracts worth $60 million, accusing Harvard of tolerating “anti-Semitism and liberal bias,” in a move seen as pressure on university administrations to prevent demonstrations in support of Palestine.
In September, the Boston District Court ruled that freezing university funds was unconstitutional, while American universities witnessed widespread protests in early April 2024 in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza, which led to the detention of more than 3,000 students and faculty members.
