With his striking presence and “Hollywood” style, California Governor Gavin Newsom is consolidating his position as the most prominent political opponent of President Donald Trump. After initially taking a conciliatory approach towards the far right, engaging in dialogues even with controversial figures such as Steve Bannon, this path did not find consensus within the Democratic Party.
But as Trump’s attacks on him escalated, Newsom changed his approach and began to respond forcefully, adopting the president’s own style, especially through social media, where he mocked him and his exaggerated rhetoric. Although bold, this strategy also did not please all Democrats.
In the midst of last summer’s tensions, when Trump ordered the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles to contain protests against raids described as arbitrary and brutal by the immigration police, he thus contradicted the will of Newsom, who considered the move an infringement on the state’s powers.
The California governor continues his harsh criticism of what he describes as “Trump’s tyranny,” stressing that “what Donald Trump wants above all else is blind loyalty, silence, and complicity,” before concluding by calling on the Americans, saying: “Do not surrender!”
