Forming an information mission about the Red Meat Division – New Algeria

The Office of the National People’s Assembly decided to form a temporary information mission about the red meat division, headed by Parliamentarian Rabah Jeddou, with the participation of all parliamentary blocs. This step comes after President Abdelmadjid Tebboune acknowledged in his speech to the nation before Parliament in both chambers at the end of last year that the country had failed to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of red meat of all kinds, in contrast to the positive indicators recorded in the rest of the agricultural divisions, especially the agricultural ones.

As revealed by parliamentary sources to “elhiwar us”, it was decided to form a temporary information mission about the red meat division, headed by MP Ben Jeddou, with the participation of all parliamentary blocs. Four states were identified for the work of this mission, which are Batna, Djelfa, El Bayadh and Oulad Jalal.

This step comes only a few days after President Tebboune acknowledged the country’s inability to achieve self-sufficiency in the production of all types of red meat, with results that are contradictory and completely opposite to the positive indicators recorded in the rest of the agricultural sectors, especially the agricultural ones. Tebboune said: “We have achieved great successes, but I reveal to you our failure in producing meat of all types, and this raises big question marks.”

Since that speech, voices have become louder calling for a reconsideration of the treatment of the crisis, so that it should be radical and not circumstantial. The National Organization of Farmer Producers and Processors said in a statement that “the essence of the crisis does not lie in the number of rams, but rather in the dangerous discrepancy in the number of female sheep born due to unjust slaughter for many years, in addition to another factor, which is drought and the shrinkage of grazing areas, which has resulted in the high cost of fodder and the poor management of its support.”

The organization proposed in a statement, of which “elhiwar us” has a copy, “assigning the Ministry of Agriculture, in coordination with the Higher Institute of Animal Health, universities, and agricultural institutes, to search for the best female breeds and stallions capable of adapting and breeding. It also proposed distributing the imported herd to model farms and state-owned investors in exchange for allocating agricultural lands to produce fodder and creating artificial pastures using the hydroseeding technique (spraying seed solutions). It also called for reliance on artificial insemination and the protection of the female.” Only males are directed to be slaughtered, with a biological rest of one or two years.

It can be said that the government’s tendency to import Eid sacrifices last year with the aim of ensuring that citizens perform the sacrifice is conclusive evidence of the challenge that awaits the relevant authorities in order to meet local demand in the next few years.

To confront this shortage in production, the government decided to import one million rams to ensure that Algerians perform the Eid al-Adha ritual, and the Minister of Internal Trade and National Market Control, Amal Abdel Latif, announced last November the establishment of a proactive mechanism to ensure the abundance of red and white meat during Ramadan 2026 through the commitment of traders to supply the market with initial quantities of approximately 30 thousand tons.

Abdel Latif said that this initial quantity, estimated at 29,545 tons, will be imported during the period extending from January 15 to March 15, 2026, and it appears that the import will focus mostly on red meat, since the national production of white meat is able this year to meet local demand without a significant increase in prices.
