Eid al-Fitr day, according to the Sirius Astronomy Society – New Algeria

issued Sirius Astronomy Societyissued a statement about the astronomical data related to the crescent of Shawwal 1447 AH, which determines the end of the month of fasting, anticipating the celebration of Eid al-Fitr on Friday, March 20.

After the association pointed out, in its statement, that the National New Crescents Committee affiliated with the Ministry of Religious Affairs is the only body authorized to officially announce the actual date of Eid al-Fitr, it clarified that the lunar conjunction will occur this year on the same day. Night of doubtThis will be on Thursday, March 19, corresponding to Ramadan 29, at 02:23 am Algeria time.

She added that at sunset on that day, the crescent will be marginally visible with the naked eye, while it is possible but difficult to see it using optical means. Its height above the horizon in the capital is only about 8 degrees. The angular elongation between the Moon and the Sun is approximately the same value.

If the sighting of the crescent moon is confirmed on Thursday evening, it is expected that Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20. However, it should be noted that the elongation value is barely above the Dungun limit of about 7 degrees, which is the minimum geometrically necessary for a crescent to form. Which makes it difficult to see, but possible under ideal conditions.

The statement indicated, for the rest of the Islamic world, that due to the impossibility of seeing the crescent on the evening of Thursday, March 19, in large areas of the Islamic world. Especially in Asia and up to the Middle East, it is expected that many countries that have begun fasting with us will announce it. Her night of doubt will be on Thursday, because the sighting of the crescent moon was not confirmed that night, and therefore Saturday, March 21 will be her first day of Eid al-Fitr.

As for the Arab countries in the East that started fasting before us, they will have to complete it Ramadan Thirty days, and thus Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20 – according to the statement.

The association confirmed that if only the astronomical “calculation” was relied upon to determine the beginning of the Eid, that is, the presence of the crescent above the horizon after sunset without requiring the possibility of actually seeing it, as is the practice in Turkey, the Balkan countries, and some Muslim communities in Europe and the United States, then the day following the 29th of Ramadan, i.e. Friday, March 20th, will be the day of Eid al-Fitr for them.
