Details of the case of journalist Abdelali Mezghish – New Algeria

Lawyer Fatiha Rouibi revealed new details regarding the case of the arrest of journalist Abdelali Mezghish, confirming that he was presented on February 9, 2026 before the Sharaga Court Prosecution before referring him to the investigating judge, who ordered that he be placed in temporary detention in the penal institution in Qalaia, after an initial hearing.
The lawyer explained in a statement that, on Thursday morning, she appealed the deposit order issued by the investigating judge, noting that her client is being pursued in the file for five misdemeanors, including displaying publications that would prejudice the national interest, and incitement to an unarmed gathering.
In the same context, she explained that she went to visit her client at the penal institution in Qalaia, where she found him in a state of shock at the nature of the charges against him, stressing that he considered what he had done to fall within the framework of media and journalistic work and the exercise of his right to expression.
She indicated in her statement that during the visit, the concerned person was informed of his legal file by journalist Abdelali Mazghish and discussed the charges against him and the measures taken against him.
At the conclusion of her statement, the lawyer conveyed her client’s request to thank everyone who expressed their solidarity with him, including media professionals, writers, and friends, expressing his hope that the judiciary would do justice to him and that he would return to his family and cultural activity as soon as possible.
On Monday, February 9, Algerian journalist and poet Abdelali Mazghish was placed in temporary detention due to posts on social media.
Mazghish is one of the active names on Facebook, where more than 130,000 people follow him. He is also a journalist on Algerian public television (ENTV). He was among the few who published information about the state of anger experienced by some residents of the city of Djanet, in protest against the imprisonment of some local figures and Tuareg notables.
