Civil Protection: 14 drowning cases since June 1 – New Algeria

The Civil Protection Services have recorded the deaths of 14 people by drowning, including 11 cases on beaches prohibited for swimming, since June 1, according to a statement by the Civil Protection Services today, Saturday.

The same source indicated that the year 2023 witnessed the death of 214 people from drowning, including 114 who died on permitted beaches.

The statement explained that “since June 1, 2024, guard personnel have carried out 1,302 interventions that allowed 699 people to be saved from drowning and to provide first aid to 365 people at the guard station level, while the death of 14 people was recorded, including 11 people on beaches prohibited for swimming.”

The same source stated that “during the year 2023, guard personnel made 74,896 interventions that allowed 48,915 people to be saved from drowning, while the death of 214 people was recorded, including 114 who died from drowning on permitted beaches.”

Regarding swimming in water complexes and pools, the Civil Protection Services considered that this phenomenon “still causes many human losses at the national level,” noting that “75 deaths were recorded in 2023, the majority of them children, despite the awareness-raising and awareness campaigns organized before and during During the entire summer season, 9 deaths were recorded this year, including 5 in water basins.”

The Civil Protection Services reported that “an analysis of statistics over the past 5 years has shown that the main causes of drowning are always swimming on beaches prohibited for swimming or during off-duty hours on guarded beaches, that is, in the absence of guard personnel, in addition to failure to respect recommendations and preventive instructions.”

The General Directorate of Civil Protection has established a practical device to guard beaches and recreation areas on beaches allowed for swimming in order to ensure the safety of vacationers, from June 1 to September 30, from 9 a.m. to 19 p.m.

The same source explained that for the year 2024, “out of a total of 613 beaches along the national coastal strip, 455 beaches allowed for swimming were counted, and they will be guarded, and 175 beaches prohibited for swimming will be identified for several reasons, including pollution, in addition to some special dangers that threaten the safety of vacationers.”
