On Monday, China made an official response to US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding Greenland, calling on Washington to avoid using other countries as a “pretext to achieve its own interests.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that the Arctic represents “an area of interest to the entire international community,” stressing that China’s activities aim to promote peace, stability and sustainable development, while respecting the rights of all countries to engage in legitimate activities there.
These statements come after Trump said on Sunday that the United States would annex Greenland “one way or another,” warning of possible moves by Russia and China, amid Denmark’s assertion that any attempt to forcefully seize the island would be “the end of everything.”
