Callas said that the American position has become clear regarding the desire to weaken the unity of the European continent, noting that this approach comes after a period of tension and turmoil in relations between the two sides.

This position comes in light of the escalation of disputes between the European Union and US President Donald Trump, who during his second term intensified his criticism of the European bloc, imposed customs duties on its member states along with other countries, and also sparked controversy with statements related to the annexation of Greenland.

In the same context, the US administration this week launched a series of trade investigations targeting the European Union and a number of economic powers, including China, India, Japan, South Korea and Mexico, alleging unfair trade practices, which may pave the way for the imposition of new customs duties by next summer.

Callas considered that Washington’s approach to dealing with the European Union reflects tactics similar to those adopted by the bloc’s opponents, calling on European countries to avoid bilateral dealings with Trump and to adhere to a unified collective position that strengthens the Union’s weight in the face of American pressure.

Regarding the defense file, the European official acknowledged the need for the Union to purchase equipment from the United States at the present time, due to the lack of necessary capabilities and capabilities, but in return she stressed the need to invest in developing the European defense industry.
