On Thursday, Madjid Bougherra held the first press conference after the Lebanese Federation announced his appointment as the head coach of the first Lebanese male football team.
The Algerian coach appeared with the President of the Lebanese Football Association, Hashem Haidar, where the two parties signed the contract binding them for three years, in the presence of local and Arab media.
Haider presented his new coach with a Lebanese national team shirt bearing the same numbering that Bougherra used to wear when he was a player in the ranks of the Greens.
The desired goal
Madjid Bougherra aspires to lead the Lebanese national team to the 2030 World Cup finals, scheduled to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
The former coach of the local national team confirmed that he chose the difficult task compared to the offers he received recently.
“Magic” described the Lebanese Federation’s project as the most important opportunity, as it aims to reach two competitions, the first in the short term, which is the 2027 Asian Cup, and the second in the long term, which is the 2030 World Cup.
For his part, Hashim Haider hopes that Bougherra will take the national team to the furthest possible stages of the competition.
The President of the Football Association indicated that the scarce financial capabilities will not constitute an obstacle for the technical staff and players, as he will work with the management office to find the necessary solutions.
The Lebanese were unable to reach the finals of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, after losing to Sudan in the final preliminary round.
On the continental level, the “Cedar Men” participated three times in the Asian Cup, the last of which was two years ago in Qatar.
The team of Montenegrin coach Miodrag Radulovic at the time left the competition in the group stage, after losing two matches against Qatar and Tajikistan and drawing without goals against China.
Lebanon has never reached the World Cup finals, despite attending on nine occasions during the Asian qualifiers.
The Lebanese national team ranked 109th globally, during the latest classification issued by the International Federation of Association Football (January 2026).
